A Gunman Kills Three and Himself at Michigan State University, Injuring Five

On Monday night, a gunman killed three people and injured five others on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing. The suspect, a 43-year-old man, was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police have confirmed that he is not associated with the university and that there was only one suspect. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

The first shooting occurred at 8:18 p.m. ET inside Berkey Hall, where the College of Social Science is located, resulting in the deaths of two people. Another shooting took place shortly after at the MSU student union, which is adjacent to Berkey Hall and a popular gathering spot for students. One person died in that incident. Both buildings are open to the public during business hours, according to the police.

In response to the incident, hundreds of officers from different agencies rushed to the scene. Victims were taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, where they were listed in critical condition. As of now, there is no further information available about the victims.

At 10:15 p.m. ET, police declared that the campus was secure, and the shelter-in-place warning was lifted early Tuesday morning. All campus activities, including both in-person and virtual classes and sporting events, have been canceled for at least 48 hours. The school is providing counseling resources for students and employees.

The MSU shooting is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have claimed dozens of lives so far in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive, an independent data collection organization. The organization defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are shot or killed, excluding the shooter. Last year, nearly 650 mass shootings took place in the United States.

Teresa Woodruff, MSU's interim president, expressed her condolences and promised to provide support to the university community. "We're devastated with the loss of life, and we want to wrap our arms around every family touched by this tragedy," she said.

The incident has once again brought the issue of gun violence to the forefront, and many are calling for stricter gun laws to prevent such senseless acts of violence from occurring in the future. The investigation into the MSU shooting is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
