What Sets Betta Fish Apart?

What Sets Betta Fish Apart?

Bettas are one of the most popular fish species for sale, and if you're thinking about maintaining one, you'll need some Betta fish knowledge. Let's talk about how big Betta fish tanks should be, whether you can keep them with other fish, what the greatest Betta fish tank mates are, and how much Betta fish cost.

Male Bettas have lengthy, brightly colored fins and tails. Most people aren't aware, however, that betas come in a variety of forms and sizes, including Veiltail, Crowntail, Combtail, Fantail, Half sun, Retail, and others.

Both sexes will flare and blow out their gills to appear more spectacular, but the male usually sticks out since the females are so dull.

What are the recommended tank sizes for Betta fish?

Bettas are offered in little containers by themselves in pet stores. Unfortunately, they are marketed as fish that can survive in only a few ounces of water, which is far from the truth. All of the "Betta fishbowls" marketed in pet stores and on the internet are entirely unsuitable and hurtful to the fish. Some even advertise monthly water changes and claim that Bettas can spend days without food. This is not the case.

I'd want to point out that Bettas are also fish, and they shouldn't be treated as such. Bettas are commonly purchased as pets for children, but children should be taught how to care for them and understand what their Bettas require.

The so-called "Japanese Fighting Fish" requires at least one gallon of water to live, but a tank of three gallons or more is ideal for a long and healthy life for your Betta. Although it is commonly believed that they reside in little puddles in Japanese rice paddies, the truth is that they live in rice fields' shallow waters, where they have plenty of room to swim and move around.

They can thrive in smaller tanks if they have enough room to move around and the water is changed every few days, but as I have stated, I believe this is a terrible practice. In the end, Bettas require a genuine aquarium, not simply a bowl. However, they have the advantage of not requiring a complicated filter setup; a simple air-powered sponge filter will suffice and reduce the need for more frequent water changes. The water should be between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, therefore you may need to use a heater to maintain that temperature.

Remember that they require a suitable water surface to obtain oxygen. They'll come to the surface to breathe, and the oxygen concentration in their water must be adequate. Because Betta fish like to jump out, I recommend covering the tanks but ensuring there is adequate space between the lid and the water's surface and enough air can get in.

Diet:

Betta pellets including mashed shrimp, wheat flour, fish meal, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vitamins can be given to them, but they should also be fed live or frozen bloodworms, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, or daphnia. Their food will be more diversified, making them healthier, more colorful, and more attractive. Bettas should be fed once a day, and any uneaten food should be removed from the tank once they have finished eating.

Tank Companions for Betta Fish:

What happens if you mix Betta fish with other fish is one of the most often asked questions. Contrary to popular opinion, there are some Betta fish tank mates that are suitable.

They usually have issues with female Betta fish as well. They can be kept together for reproductive purposes for a short time, but the female should be removed from the tank. Never put two or more male Bettas in the same room. There's a reason they're nicknamed Fighting Fish.

Bettas in groups of three or more should be retained since females are territorial and may attempt to establish dominance over one another, thus odd numbers are always preferable.

Male Bettas could be kept with other tropical fish that require similar temperatures and water quality. Bettas may be attracted to and nip at other fish with bright colors or long, flowing fins, such as Fancy Guppies or Mollies.

Do not keep them in the same tank as other aggressive fish. Bettas do not get along well with gouramies in the aquarium. These are fish that breathe from the water's surface, which can make them aggressive toward Bettas and vice versa.

Bettas, tropical freshwater fish, should never be kept with goldfish, which are cold-water fish. Bettas will also nip at your goldfish, causing serious damage to them.

Small kinds of catfish, such as Corydoras and other bottom feeders, could make good Betta fish tank mates. Bettas have thrived in the presence of Neon Tetras and Platys. Snails and shrimp may also make good companions.

Bettas will battle anything you put in their tank, so you can experiment to see what happens with your specific fish, but keep an eye on them.

What is the price of a Betta fish?

Betta fish in pet stores range in price from $1 to $10, but you may also get Betta fish for hundreds of dollars. Beautiful specimens can be found for a cheaper price, but some experienced fish keepers will go to any length to find some of the rarest and most stunning Betta species.
